Regular Season Gets Underway Tonight

There are 2 games slated to get underway tonight. Peninsula and Saanich hook up for their final exhibition game while the defending champion Campbell River Storm open the regular season against the Oceanside Generals. The Generals, who are a very young team again this season, missed the playoffs a year ago while the Storm went 12-1-0-3.

Mark Berry will be handling the “play by play” starting with the pregame show at 7:05 on HockeyTV. You can also listen to it prior to that on the VIJHL website by clicking on the link. The Storm will be right back in action tomorrow when they face the Comox Valley Glacier Kings. Those are the only 2 regular season games this weekend.

Icemen Get Ready For A New Season

The Comox Valley Glacier Kings just wrapped up their 2nd last practice ahead of their season opener on Saturday when they host the reigning champion Campbell River Storm. As much excitement as there is for this year’s squad, there’s also a feeling of “here we go again” with the amount of injuries that are creeping up. The good news is there are re-enforcements on the way with a big-time defenceman and forward that should be joining the team soon. Head coach Joey Ewing said he is positive that this version of the Glacier Kings will be better than last year’s. 20170831_201815

Comox finished with a 1-2 exhibition record. A lot of the first year players got a lot of ice-time and valuable experience in the 3 games and will be put straight to work on a team with a large turn-over. Unfortunately, key returning players like Scott Rademaker and Matteo Giomo are questionable for the home-opener as well as veteran defenceman Ty Madden. However getting well-travelled goaltender Matt Henwood between the pipes will be a real asset. One thing we can all agree on is that this season should be interesting one way or another. Optimism is definitely on the horizon. Game 1 is Saturday at 7:30 PM at the Recreation Centre. The broadcast with Randall Heidt and myself begins on HockeyTV at 7:15 PM.
